entering the sistine chapel. >> extra ominous. >> reporter: with those words meaning "everyone out." the doors locked. the cardinals left alone to pray and cast the first round of ballots in secrecy. while no pope was elected yet the first vote experts say is already having an impact. as the cardinals shared dinner at their isolated temporary home within the vatican walls. >> they're encouraged to discuss among themselves. they will have the vote getters from the very first vote and talk about now where do we go. >> reporter: narrowing the field as the world watches this chimney for the first sight of white smoke waiting for the next leader of the roman catholic church. >> we definitely want to experience it. there is nothing else we would rather do. we would rather be here experiencing history. >> well i come twice a day to see the smoke. i have the schedule. and you know, i will either go home ecstatic or i will just go home and hope for the best.

>> reporter: the cardinals will return to the sistine chapel later today. from here on out there could be four rounds of voting each day until one man gets 2/3 of the votes and is named the new pope. rob and diana. >> vatican insiders say even the cardinals who have received the most attention in recent days may not have made it past the first vote. we have been told repeatedly the chances that the pope will be from the u.s. is quite a long shot. but one expert tells abc's diane sawyer that certain italians are still rooting for an american. >> you were telling me earlier today that the cab drivers, if the cab drivers in rome had a vote tonight it wouldn't even be close it would be american because -- >> there is no question who the cab drivers in rome are in favor of. it is americans. the americans have money. and the americans have tourist who come to rome. and they will be taking their cabs. the cab drivers are rooting for cardinal o'malley or cardinal dolan. >> when the new pope is chosen you can be among the first to know. the website popealarm.com is

from letterman. from david letterman. >> letterman, we love you. back to politics here at home and the battle over the budget. president obama makes a rare trip to capitol hill this afternoon to meet with republicans in the house. yesterday the gop released its plan to balance the budget in ten years and do it without tax increases. the president addressed that budget plan when he sat down for an exclusive interview with abc's george stephanopoulos. >> my goal is not to chase a balanced budget just for the sake of balance. my goal is how do we grow the economy, put people back to work and if we do that we are going to be bringing in more revenue. if we have controlled spending and we have a smart entitlement package potentially what you have is balance, but it is not balance on the backs of, you know, the poor, the elderly, students who need student loans, families who have disabled kids. that's not the right way to balance our budget. >> the white house says the math in the gop budget plan simply

doesn't add up and it would hurt the middle-class. you can see the full exclusive interview a little later today coming up on "good morning america." a new piece of gun control legislation faces an uphill fight in congress despite taking the first step. a senate committee yesterday approved a bill requiring nearly universal federal background checks for gun buyers including those at gun shows. it passed without any republican votes and its future is unclear in the full senate. tomorrow the same committee votes on a measure to ban assault weapons and high capacity ammunition magazines. >> not guilty plea entered for aurora, colorado theater attack suspect james holmes. his trial set for early august. holmes was back in court yesterday sitting silently in a red jumpsuit with a thick brown beard, different hair color there. that not guilty plea was entered by the judge after holmes' attorneys said they weren't ready to enter one. he said it could be changed to not guilty by reason of insanity later on. holmes faces death or life in

prison if convicted for the massacre last summer that left 12 people dead. the tsa is facing opposition over its decision to allow pocketknives back on airplanes. american airlines became the third major carrier to urge the administration not to lift the ban. yesterday, massachusetts congressman ed markey introduced a bipartisan measure, the no knives act designed to prevent that change. >> it makes absolutely no sense to allow passengers to carry knives like this into the passenger cabins of planes anywhere in our country. >> flight attendants, air marshalls and pilots are opposed to the relaxed rule scheduled to go into effect april 25th. moving on now to a story out of mississippi. that state's so-called anti-bloomberg bill. bloomberg as in new york city mayor michael bloomberg who plans to limit super sized

sugary drinks. the plan put on hold monday by the court. while mississippi lawmakers have approved a bill that bars calorie counts from being posted as well as caps on portion sizes. the governor is expected to sign it. by the way, mississippi has the highest obesity rate in the entire country. >> oh, mississippi. >> mm. and a florida worker has extra spending money because he decided to do the right thing. >> a 3-carat diamond dropped out of an engagement ring at a pet smart in vero beach when she came tune have her dogs groomed. the store manager found the $30,000 gem and gave it back to the very grateful customer. >> the woman and husband gave the manager a $500 reward. he said it never occurred to him to keep the diamond. >> we heard a lot of stories like this lately. the homeless gentleman who found the diamond ring in his cup. this story. good people in the world. we love stories like this. >> there are more better angels in the world than we think or

a big discovery on the red planet. the "curiosity" rover has been collecting samples for months and nasa announced now that they do have evidence that there may have once been life on mars. >> well scientists studied rock samples from a 3 billion-year-old lake bed and say it was once filled with pure water. abc's brandi hitt has more. >> good morning, rob, and diana. scientists say this is huge. it didn't take "curiosity" long to find concrete evidence that life could have been supported on mars and this little rover is not done searching. only 7 months after its celebrated landing on mars, the "curiosity" rover has now answered a key question. yes, mars could have hosted

life. >> this was an ancient environment with the right elements and slightly salty liquid water. all of the prerequisites to support life. >> probably if this water was around and you had been on the planet you would have been able to drink it. >> reporter: nasa made the startling discovery thanks to chemical analysis of a powder "curiosity" recovered by drilling a hole into a rock. it struck pay dirt. finding half a dozen key elements. photos taken by the rover also show a lake bed, scientists say was filled with sediment derived by streams. >> the place that was, that was wet, for relatively long period of time enough for all these chemical reactions to occur. >> reporter: how valuable has the little rover been to nasa? >> this has been huge. >> reporter: scott hubbard was nasa's first mars program director. he says the next step is to build a robot that can bring samples back to earth for testing. until then scientists are

chapel this morning at 9:30 rome time. after reciting some prayers they will vote again. and so there can be as you indicated two votes each morning. the thing that is interesting they now know a great deal more than we -- than we do. because they were there yesterday. they have been through one round of voting. and while they don't know where each individual cardinal stands, they know where the general trend is. so they have seen the poll as it were of where the voters are. they know what the possibilities are. so the conversations that they're now having among themselves are likely to be something like, you know, "who is really a possible candidate

who here has some kind of critical mass and who does not." >> father, they don't understand necessarily know how the cardinal next to them voted but have a sense from the aggregate vote who is trending and now who are the actual numerical front-runners in this thing is that correct? >> that is exactly right. >> let me ask you this -- what is it like in between the votes? are there private conversations? are there factions that develop? practically speaking how does this play out in terms of getting to the ultimate decision? >> well there are certain ancient protocols in place here. it is all about having a conversation indirectly. and so in other word, you don't approach a possible candidate directly and ask them about what they might do or not do. you tend to approach their friends, the people who work with that person. and ask them, how might this person be? as a possible candidate. and also, obviously you, don't propose yourself as a possible candidate. these are -- you know this custom of indirect communication has arisen over the centuries as a means of guarding against ambition. those are the kinds of conversations now happening in groups of two or three. probably not more than that.

>> so, now, father, what you are basically saying the front-runner knows who they are, obviously, the front-runners know who they are. are these people now more isolated than they were before? are they alone in prayer? since you said you can't approach the person, obviously you think is going to be the next pope, that person can't approach anybody else about when they become pope, if they do, is this person now more isolated than before? >> it may very well be people that some people who want to talk about his candidacy are not going to approach him directly and talking to other persons. an talking to other persons. the person is no more physically isolated than he was before. he hasn't gone off in any special room or participating in special prayers. but he certainly is well aware of the fact that he has a significant number of votes. >> yes, or no, about five seconds left. you do expect a decision most like ly by the end of the workweek, still fair to say? >> yes. probably not today. but anything is possible. >> thank you, father malone, appreciate that. thank you for joining us for a second day. look forward to insight as the week progresses. of course, the big topic of conversation is who the next pope may actually ultimately be. bookmakers have italian

cardinal angelo scola and as the favorite and followed by cardinal odilo scherer of brazil. the ireland site patty power estimates $1 million has been spent on pope-related bets. check out who has the growing support. >> we have taken a lot of money on the americans. timothy dolan cut from 100 to 1 to 20 to 1 on the strength of money placed on him. that would be a terrible result for us the we are praying he doesn't get in. >> you can also bet on the papal name of the next pope, length of the conclave and the next pope's age and also where his first foreign visit will take place. bets are being taken until the next pope is introduced. sex abuse by priests will be one of the top challenges faced by the new pope. in los angeles, the arch diocese will pay $10 million to settle four sex abuse cases, involving former priest michael baker who told cardinal mahoney nearly 30 years ago that he had molested children. the suits claim that the church

didn't do enough to stop that abuse. >> obviously, whoever takes over the church in the coming days this is still a massive scandal. and there is still incredible fallout from this. and you have to believe no matter who gets the job that is at the very top of the agenda to begin cleaning up or continue cleaning up the image of the church and taking the right legal steps to do right by the victims. >> right. the image of the church as far as that goes, finances of the church, talking about an institution so widespread and really isn't doing well financially. but as far as the sex abuse goes, unfortunately in this day and age because of social media we know so much more about what is happening in the underlinings of the church than we did 100 years ago. who says it wasn't happening as prolifically then as now. >> why have no idea. the climate has changed. another settlement out of l.a. the public school district

reached a settlement in a extremely disturbing sex abuse scandal. 3rd grade teacher mark burnt accused of blindfolding students and feeding them semen. 60 students will receive $500,000 each. many parents settled to avoid putting kids through the trial. some families refused to settle saying the money is not nearly enough. >> one of our forensic psychologists has told us that the long-term mental health care treatment over the lifetime of the kids will be in the range of approximately $576,000 life term. so the amounts they're putting on the table are unacceptable from our point of view. >> nearly 200 claims were filed. burnt taught at that elementary school for 32 years. a day-long standoff along the oregon coast ended with a double murder suspect hospitalized. it took place at a motel where a man suspected of killing his grandparents was holed up in a room.

police sent a robot with a camera to look inside. the suspect was found with serious self-inflicted cuts and he was air lifted to a hospital and is listed in critical condition. in ohio today, the well-publicized trial of two high school football players set to get under way. trent mays and malik richmond are accused of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl during a booze fueled party last summer. a key piece of evidence is a picture that shows the two boys carrying the alleged victim. they say that picture was staged. now their attorney claims the boys are innocent. >> that case has so divided that community. that is a very, very hot trial and sad. no matter what truth. >> no matter what the outcome or truth is. >> travel across europe snarled after a sudden dump of late-season snow. the frankfurt airport in germany, europe's third largest had to be shut down for snow removal. >> who doesn't hate a sudden dump? thousand of school children had to stay home. tens of thousand of homes were without electricity. in france the army was called in to clear the snow and help rescue motorists who got stranded there in their cars. can you tell my days are numbered?

james holmes. looking different than the last time we saw him, holmes' plea was entered as some of his victims spoke out. also this morning, an important warning about a medication many people ask for by name. it is the z-pak. now comes word that for some people take it could be fatal. >> that stuff is really popular i've had bronchitis a few times, taken the z-pak. >> walk into the doctor's office. don't need to go to the doctor's office. go to one of the minute clinics one of the pharmacies and say, i will take a z-pak. >> just look that. find out later things have a downside. here we go on that. later this half hour, keeping control of teenagers, of course, is no easy feat for anybody. but for men of the cloth there is added pressure. a new reality tv show reveals how the experience can really, let's say, test their faith. another reality show. another controversy. >> this one is -- though, it is going to touch a bunch of nerves. >> oh, yeah. oh, yeah.

>> yikes. but before all of that, the world's catholics could learn who their new leader could be as soon as today. >> a live look at the sistine chapel where the cardinals are regrouping to make another try. josh elliott reports on yesterday's inconclusive conclave. >> reporter: as the rains fell, the crowds packed st. peter's square looking skyward for the result of the first papal vote. and then the dense black smoke rose indicating there was no consensus yet. just hours before, the 115 voting cardinals, entered perhaps sneaking in some last conversations before heading to the conclave. some such as boston's cardinal sean o'malley took the time to sit alone in prayer. one by one the cardinals walked down the aisle before taking individual oaths to obey the rules of the conclave which demand the utmost secrecy. if they ever break their silence, they risk

excommunication. cardinal dolan thought to be a considerable contender gave a final radio dispatch from rome before heading into conclave himself. >> a unique special morning, i never thought i would be doing what i am about to do. >> reporter: the last word from him for a while. "everyone out" and with that the doors closed. the work of choosing a pope would truly begin. >> there is a sanctity in the air, they try to see who does it belong to among the 115 cardinals -- who is the person who is holy? that's the toughest judgment of all. >> reporter: then when the world sees white, inside the sistine chapel, the dean of cardinals will ask the newly elected pope if he accepts the result. if he does, he is from that moment the new pope and chooses the name he will then be called. next he walks to the nearby room

of tears, so-called because some newly elected popes have in the past cried there as they absorb the enormity of the moment. he then dons his new robes, puts the papal ring on his finger and is led down the hall of blessings to the central window of st. peter's basilica where he is introduced to the masses with a simple latin phrase "we have a pope." the world's wait continues. if history is any indication of how long this might take, keep in mind that none of the last four conclaves lasted more than three days. keep in mind, the last conclave to go more than five days was back in 1831, that one took 50 days. josh elliott, abc news, vatican city. >> the countdown is on. as that conclave went on inside though, outside a moment of chaos. just steps away from st. peter's basilica. these women took off their tops to protest what they call patriarchy in the church. the protesters sent off pink flares chanting "no more pope"

before they were restrained by officers and carried to a police station. also thousands of pilgrims who have packed the square to show support for the church. many waited for hours to get a seat to get a glimpse of the cardinals one of whom will be the next pope. they gathered to watch as the black smoke poured from the sistine chapel and to wait for yet another day. hundreds of thousands of people are descending on rome. this is a big deal. a lot of people want to be a part of history. and not only are they looking for the cardinals going in to catch a glimpse of the next pope they want to be there when the pope is announced. hopefully it will not take 50 days. >> by all accounts, we should have a new pope by the end of the week. three days, wednesday, thursday, maybe start the show friday morning we will have or be on

the vur the verge of quickly a new pope. if history is any indication. this will move quickly. holy week is coming up. they want to move fairly fast. >> they want some one in place. one person in particular who is there you were excited to tell the public about. tell the people. inform the masses, rob. >> this may be my favorite detail ever. apparently, dennis rodman, yes, nba bad boy, weird boy, whatever you want to call him. he is prepared to be in st. peter's square today in a make shift pope-mobile as he campaigns for the cardinal from ghana to become the next pope. so we had him in north korea now in vatican city. dennis rodman. >> he is a busy man. when he's not busy politicking for the united states, he's politicking for a black pope. that's okay. he is a busy man. >> in the midst of sea of faithful, devout folks, i can't see of all people, dennis rodman cruising in a pope mobile with the tattoos. and the colored hair. >> you can't see it? you cannot picture that? really? >> when i think pope i don't

think dennis rodman. >> when you think north korea, rob, when you think, when you think our political show with george stephanopoulos. >> you don't think dennis rodman. >> but it has happened. >> man, dennis. >> uh-huh. >> okay. moving on to this now. the sex abuse scandal is one of the many challenges faced by the next pope. pope. the arch diocese of los angeles reached a nearly $10 million settlement involving four victims. the cases involving ex-priest, michael baker, who admitted to church higher-ups he did molest children. the suit claimed the church did not do enough to stop baker even after he confessed. and speaking of settlements and staying in los angeles, the l.a. school district reached a settlement themselves. in the sex abuse scandal at an elementary school. third grade teacher mark burnt accused of spoon-feeding student semen under the pretense of a tasting game. about 60 children will receive about $500,000 each. many parents settled to avoid putting their kids through a

trial. but there are 60 other families who chose not to settle in this case. from one disturbing story to another. now that aurora, colorado, movie theater massacre suspect james holmes had a not guilty plea entered for him. his trial is set to begin august 5th. holmes was in court yesterday in a red jumpsuit with a beard now and with his formerly orange hair now brown. one victim says he was disappointed though that he did not hear holmes plead guilty from out of his own mouth. >> it is enough just to come here and it's hard emotionally like the days leading up to it, it is difficult. i only can imagine what the other victims feel like too. you know, it's hard. like people don't understand like we live with this every single day. >> the judge said holmes could change his plea to not guilty by reason of insanity later if he chooses to. if convicted for the attack in july of last year, holmes faces the death penalty or life in prison.

new york city police officer dubbed the cannibal cop has been convicted in a grisly plot to kidnap, kill and eat women including his wife. defense attorney gilberto valley says it was a twisted fantasy and he never intended to harm any one. prosecutors say valley's conversations on a cannibal imp website said he was taking concrete steps to carry out the crimes he could get life in prison. a baby shot on the chicago street while her dad was changing her diaper died. 6-month-old janelle watkins the latest victim of gang violence intensifying across the city. she was shot five times when someone ambushed her father as he changed her in the passenger seat of his van. her dad also shot several times is a known gang member with a long criminal history. in much lighter news, right now, golf courses are known for holes, but not many like this one. that 18-foot deep hole swallowed a golfer when it first opened up

last friday in southern illinois. the man injured his shoulder but was rescued after 20 minutes. a state geology expert said the sinkhole happened because limestone dissolved causing the ground to collapse. it makes that hole a lot tougher needless to say. makes a hole in one easier. >> makes the hole a lot easier if you ask me with the way i hit a golf ball. >> i'm a putt-putt guy. >> better chance of hitting a golf ball if i kick it. >> about right. a great moment, it happened back in january, vanderbilt university in nashville. superstar singer billy joel was there taking questions from some students. >> right, a freshman, got to ask his own question. he is from long island, new york just like joel is well he asked if he could come on stage and if they could perform "new york state of mind" together.

vowing to faithfully follow the rules of the papal election and entering the sistine chapel. >> extra ominous. >> reporter: with those words meaning "everyone out." the doors locked. the cardinals left alone to pray and cast the first round of ballots in secrecy. while no pope was elected yet the first vote experts say is already having an impact. as the cardinals shared dinner at their isolated temporary home within the vatican walls. >> they're encouraged to discuss among themselves. they will have the vote getters from the very first vote and talk about now where do we go. >> reporter: narrowing the field as the world watches this chimney for the first sight of white smoke waiting for the next leader of the roman catholic church. >> we definitely want to experience it. there is nothing else we would rather do. we would rather be here experiencing history. >> well i come twice a day to see the smoke.

i have the schedule. and you know, i will either go home ecstatic or i will just go home and hope for the best. >> reporter: the cardinals will return to the sistine chapel later today. from here on out there could be four rounds of voting each day until one man gets 2/3 of the votes and is named the new pope. rob and diana. >> vatican insiders say even the cardinals who have received the most attention in recent days may not have made it past the first vote. we have been told repeatedly the chances that the pope will be from the u.s. is quite a long shot. but one expert tells abc's diane sawyer that certain italians are still rooting for an american. >> you were telling me earlier today that the cab drivers, if the cab drivers in rome had a vote tonight it wouldn't even be close it would be american because -- >> there is no question who the cab drivers in rome are in favor of. it is americans. the americans have money. and the americans have tourist who come to rome. and they will be taking their cabs. the cab drivers are rooting for cardinal o'malley or cardinal dolan. >> when the new pope is chosen you can be among the first to know.

the website popealarm.com is promising to send an e-mail or text to anyone who signs up. there, once again, evidence that we are in a completely different era. this time around when it comes to this pope election. >> you have to wonder too, after they take that vote -- obviously no one expects them to get it on the first try. the black smoke yesterday was not a surprise. i wonder, haven't heard this yet, what goes on in between the votes. are they sitting down politicking, or taking each other off to the side to build factions. i wonder what those conversations are like. >> are they praying, isolating themselves and praying for god to give them the sign? it is hard to know. even before they went in there was little speak of what happened once they're inside except for the fact that we were told you are not allowed to politic for yourself. you are not allowed to talk directly to the person you think will be the next pope. interesting to see what is happening on the sidelines. >> david letterman had a great line, he said -- when you see black smoke they haven't picked. if you see white smoke they picked. if you see blue smoke they are cooking ribs.

i thought that was a great line from david letterman. >> letterman, we love you. back to politics here at home and the battle over the budget. president obama makes a rare trip to capitol hill this afternoon to meet with republicans in the house. yesterday the gop released its plan to balance the budget in ten years and do it without tax increases. the president addressed that budget plan when he sat down for an exclusive interview with abc's george stephanopoulos. >> my goal is not to chase a balanced budget just for the sake of balance. my goal is how do we grow the economy, put people back to work and if we do that we are going to be bringing in more revenue. if we have controlled spending and we have a smart entitlement package potentially what you have is balance, but it is not balance on the backs of, you know, the poor, the elderly, students who need student loans, families who have disabled kids. that's not the right way to balance our budget. >> the white house says the math in the gop budget plan simply doesn't add up and it would hurt

the middle-class. you can see the full exclusive interview a little later today coming up on "good morning america." a new piece of gun control legislation faces an uphill fight in congress despite taking the first step. a senate committee yesterday approved a bill requiring nearly universal federal background checks for gun buyers including those at gun shows. it passed without any republican votes and its future is unclear in the full senate. tomorrow the same committee votes on a measure to ban assault weapons and high capacity ammunition magazines. a not guilty plea has been entered for aurora, colorado, theater attack suspect james holmes. his trial set for early august. holmes was back in court yesterday sitting silently in a red jumpsuit with a thick brown beard, different hair color there. that not guilty plea was entered by the judge after holmes' attorneys said they weren't ready to enter one. he said it could be changed to not guilty by reason of insanity later on. holmes faces death or life in

prison if convicted for the massacre last summer that left 12 people dead. the tsa is facing opposition over its decision to allow pocketknives back on airplanes. american airlines became the third major carrier to urge the administration not to lift the ban. yesterday, massachusetts congressman ed markey introduced a bipartisan measure, the no knives act designed to prevent that change. >> it makes absolutely no sense to allow passengers to carry knives like this into the passenger cabins of planes anywhere in our country. >> flight attendants, air marshalls and pilots are opposed to the relaxed rule scheduled to go into effect april 25th. moving on now to a story out of mississippi. that state's so-called anti-bloomberg bill. bloomberg as in new york city mayor michael bloomberg who

plans to limit super sized sugary drinks. the plan put on hold monday by the court. while mississippi lawmakers have approved a bill that bars calorie counts from being posted as well as caps on portion sizes. the governor is expected to sign it. by the way, mississippi has the highest obesity rate in the entire country. >> oh, mississippi. >> mm. and a florida worker has extra spending money because he decided to do the right thing. >> a 3-carat diamond dropped out of a woman's engagement ring at a petsmart in vero beach . >> the papal conclave, choosing the new pope. i'm josh elliot here in vatican city. as you can see just behind me, a massive crowd has gathered in st. peter's square to see the smoke pouring from that

temporary chimany affixed. we cannot tell at this point if that smoke is black or white. if they have failed to reach a two-thirds majority consensus or if we do, in fact, have history's 266th pope. we are joined by john, author of the vatican and cokie roberts. i want to ask you if this is, in fact, white smoke we're seeing, it would suggest a rather quick consensus had been reached. what might that suggest to you on who we'll see who will walk out on the scarlet-draped -- >> you're right, it is difficult to tell. is this black or white? suddenly it looks whiter than it

did a few seconds ago. very surprising to everyone if this is white smoke at this early point in the conclave. it would indicate that probably one of the three or four frontrunners actually gained enough traction in the initial ballots to go over the top quite early. and i think what we're talking about here is cardinal scola of mila milan. >> again, we should repeat, it is hard to tell if the smoke is, in fact, white or black. it is a rather gray color right now. cokie, reminiscent, of course, of both the conclaves of 2005 and 1978 when it did confuse a world's media here in st. peter's square. again, we should also point out, we're not hearing the bells

peel. but, i tell you, with the crowds here gathered with their umbrellas, with their umbrellas up, st. peter's square has turned into a giant kaleidoscope as we all turn to look at these giant video screens up here in the square itself. >> yes. always just a moment when these elections are taking place, particularly when suspenseful like this. it looks more black than white to me. we are not hearing the bells, but, of course, we didn't hear the bells for a while in 2005. so, it's hard to know whether we could be having a moment here. but i suspect we don't have a pope yet. >> again, we should point out, also in 1978 when the smoke actually had been spewing for white at night, it did appear, perhaps, that it was black. so, the crowd's in st. peter's square started gathering their

things before they heard the bells calling everybody back to greet the new pope. you say you believe we don't have a pope and we should now mention that there is no more smoke pouring from inside and now we see more smoke and, again, it does appear a dark gray. so, john, if we assume that this is black. if we assume that no consensus has been reached. reading your blog today, a very important moment could then happen if we see the cardinals then make their way back to santa marta house for lunch and the first real discussions that could be had today. >> right. i think last night the first ballot gave the lay of the land. we saw probably as many as 15 cardinals getting votes, at least that's what i have been told has happened in the past. this morning, i think what we're seeing is a narrowing down of the candidates. i think all of the cardinals want to get to the finish line here. so, you know, i don't think they're going to be holding out

for candidates who they feel do not have a real chance. so, we could see the field narrow down to the top three or four or five candidates. that will be discussed over lunch. and these luncheons and what happens after lunch are very important. >> again, another round of real politicking. it it would appear set to begin as we can now conclude that is, in fact, black smoke pouring from the temporary chimney affixed the sistine chapel as the conclave will now continue as the cardinal electors seek consensus. a two-thirds majority and the 266th pope in history. we'll have much more coming up for the east coast viewers on "good morning america" set to begin about 15 minutes from now and, again, stay here with abc news all day long as we continue to watch that chimney here outside vatican city. i'm josh elliot. thanks for joining us.
